Kayaking was an unexpected highlight of our Redwood trip! Carl gave us the perfect route for our adventure in the Smith River Estuary. We were able to see river otters and walk on a quite sand beach with large shells. The best part was going to the end of the peninsula and seeing at least thirty harbor seals jump into the water and swim around us! The service Carl gave us was also fantastic! He took the kayak down to the river for us and had a dog pad for puppy to sit on. He made sure we had everything we needed. He was great to work with!

The equipment (kayak, paddles, life jackets) were excellent and Carl's responsiveness and professionalism was exceptional. I also appreciated his attention to ensuring safety during Covid times. I can not recommend Smith River Kayaks enough. Me and my two boys (10 & 12) went through the redwoods on a 5 hour self-guided kayak trip. The water was just rough enough to be exciting but still feel mostly safe. The Smith River is a jewel of a river.

This was a very fun experience that was easy to pull together. There were four of us and a dog. The tandem kayak was able to accommodate the dog. Tandem kayaks run for $75 and solo kayaks run for $50. Carl provides life vests and shoes; I recommend taking both so as to stay safe and not get your own shoes wet and/or muddy. Carl also provides a plastic box and clip to protect your phone and such from getting wet. Carl drives you (we followed with our own car) to the end point first to show you where to stop and then we followed him to the starting point. He drove one of us back to get our car at the end. Total time kayaking was about 3.5-4 hours. Bring a small backpack for snacks and water. Bring cash for Carl and you’re good to go.
